Chelsea 3-1 Arsenal: Emma Hayes' side go three points clear at top of WSL
Sjoeke Nusken scores first-half double after Vivianne Miedema opener
Chelsea moved three points clear at the top of the Women's Super League (WSL) with a 3-1 victory over Arsenal at Kingsmeadow on Sunday. Sjoeke Nusken scored twice in the first half to give the Blues a 2-0 lead before Vivianne Miedema pulled one back for the Gunners. However, Fran Kirby sealed the win for Chelsea with a third goal in the second half.
The result means that Chelsea now have 30 points from 12 games, while Arsenal remain in second place with 27 points. Manchester United are in third place with 26 points, while Manchester City are fourth with 25 points.
Chelsea made a bright start to the game and took the lead after just six minutes. Miedema played a lovely through ball to Nusken, who fired the ball past Arsenal goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger.
The Blues continued to press and doubled their lead in the 23rd minute. Nusken again got on the scoresheet, this time heading home a cross from Kirby.
Arsenal pulled one back in the 35th minute through Miedema. The Dutch striker latched onto a long ball from Zinsberger and lobbed the ball over Chelsea goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger.
However, Chelsea restored their two-goal lead in the 55th minute. Kirby scored a stunning goal, curling the ball into the top corner from the edge of the area.
Arsenal pressed for a second goal but were unable to find a way past Berger. Chelsea held on for a 3-1 victory, which gives them a three-point lead at the top of the WSL.
